How to remove dust from video

Sun Jun 22, 2014 7:09 pm
Hi,

this is my first post here. I'm using Kdenlive to produce the videos for my youtube channel http://youtube.com/user/flightvideophoto.

Now I have some beautiful videos like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygnCtP41DH0 where you can see some piece of dust highlighted in the red squares. I had to clean the lens of the camera better.

Is it possible to remove them? How can I remove the dust?

Thanks in advance.

Your second link is leading a video marked private - youtube does not play it.

Sorry for my mistake. Now the video is unlisted so you can see an example of my issue.
The dust is very noising also in some other videos with the blue sky in the background where the dots are more visible.

Thanks for sharing your ideas.

Looks more like dirt on sensor to me - dirt on the lens is usually that sharp only with zoom at wideangle, even with the small video chips, but this looks like a tele shot.

Yes, it's a video made with a tele. My camera is in a laboratory for cleaning the sensor, but, of course, I cannot shoot the video again.

ruggerop - what do you expect sofware to be able to do for you here? What algorithm could be used to predict missing data from your footage? How would it work?
I am allways amazed at what software can do to images. eg Image stabilization. But I dunno if it is even possible to fix this sort of issue in post.

The commercial DaVinci software is said to remove dust to a certain degree. But then, this is not the cheapest commercial stuff, so it is aimed at those that need to salvage and restore old and most probably analog footage. In such cases, the results and value of the original footage is probably worth the bucks several times spent on such dust removal software.

Wow. I stand corrected. Who would of thunk you could do this. I wonder how it does it? Just goes to show there are lots of people smarter than me !!!

So on searching for Da Vinci I found a forum post that bad mouthed that software and recomended PFClean
And then I found this page and note that the effect that PFClean offers up for this job is the Lens Dirt tool - "Clean Lens Dirt effect".
This tool fixes "persistant static defects" which is what the OP has on his footage.
On this page is an example of it in use. And it looks like it actually bloody works. Amazaing.

So that is what you need. PFClean - retail price $9,999 (I kid you not) http://www.thepixelfarm.co.uk/products/PFClean

As you have static dust, you might have some success by removing the dust picture by picture using Gimp batch processing. This solution would be for free... :-)

1. Full frame export your footage as PNGs
2. Try to remove the dust by applying appropriate effects in Gimp on one picture
3. Use Gimps batch processing on all frames from step 1 (http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/Basic_Batch/)
4. Create a new movie from the corrected frames
