How to make text appear one letter at a time?

Hello,

I am trying to make text appear on screen like it is being typed. As in, one letter, or word, at a time.

It is common in JRPG video games like this:

Is there a text/video effect that can create this? I haven't been able to find one.

Under 'Project', go to 'Add Title Clip'. Once you add your text, you can use the 'Typewriter' setting under 'Effects' on the Title Clip creation screen. You can also change the duration of the effect.

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately, I don't see an 'Effects' option in the Title Clip creation window. Nothing is mentioned in the documentation either:
https://userbase.kde.org/Kdenlive/Manual/Titles

Nor could I find "typewriter" in the Effects Tab.

I am running 17.04.02 from the Fedora Repos.

Sorry about that. I was in KXStudio (linux) and looking at Kdenlive 9.10.

I looked at Kdenlive 17.04 and that effect is no longer there - the only effect I see is for zooming, which can already be done with the Pan and Zoom effect. I don't really like the 17.04 version of 'Add Title Clip'. It can be probably be done with some creative thinking - but I don't see an easy way to do it.

I think that the Typewriter Effect is something the devs should restore to Kdenlive.

Thanks anyway.

Unfortunately, I am making an animated series and the typewriter effect is crucial to my project. I would consider paying a developer to write the plugin (if that is even an option). In the meantime, I am going to have to try Lightworks, which isn't FOSS :(

I'd never heard of KXStudio. Looks great for audio production.

Hello
TypeWriter effect was gone since 0.9.10 due to a difficult bug in Qt5 (in unmaintained QGraphics component).
However a new attempt to bring it back is under review for few days, seems promising :)
To get it once out you will need a fresh build of MLT & Kdenlive : either compiling from source, or using Ubuntu PPA / Arch AUR / AppImage...
Be patient for a few weeks :\

KXStudio is great for both audio and video production. It is based on Ubuntu 14.04. Kdenlive 9.10 is included. I'm using it for my video projects which will eventually be on Youtube. Since you really need this effect; you may want to consider switching to KXStudio - it is very good, in my opinion (better than Ubuntu Studio and AVLinux).

Also; thank you vpinon for the information.

Thanks for all the info vpinon!
I am assuming the release notes will mention "TypeWriter effect" or something similar if it passes review?
I'll keep an eye on the release notes.

-I'll have to try KXStudio for video production. Though Ubuntu 14.04 is old for me. I am used to Fedora's fresh packages ;)

You can make this effect with Alpha Operations, I did this in 30seg.
It's not good but could be, If we spend more time. ;)

Thanks for the response and uploading a video example. I wasn't able to recreate it myself (I don't know the Alpha Operations effect well). However, I did create something similar with the Wipe Transition ( I think it was wipe. I made it a while ago).

Unfortunately, this doesn't work well with multiple lines of text. And since I plan to tell a long story using only text, it isn't a practical long term solution. I appreciate your suggestion though.

Sorry, I said "Alpha Operations" the correct is Alpha Manipulation

I think it can help you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DaK10agVGk0

If you need this effect for a long text, my way is not cool, but is much better than Wipe Transition.
You gonna need one timeline for each line in your text, so If you tell the story like five lines per page we can do it ^-^ , however If you have thirty lines per page..... Sorry but it's too much work. :(

Here's a tutorial that I made that shows letters appearing one at a time:
