Need a "package" icon

Sat Aug 23, 2014 6:48 pm
Hello VDG,
I'm working on KDE application installers for MS Windows. Currently all installers have the same ugly 15-year-old default icon Image I'd like to make something nicer :)

I need an icon to represent "installer" or "package", such as a box. Preferably in Oxygen style (since all application icons are also using Oxygen at the moment), but Breeze style will be fine too. Perhaps simply extracting the box out of mimetypes/application-zip.png will be enough! I will overlay the application icon on top.

If you have any original ideas not involving a box, that's also welcome. The main thing I want to avoid is the presence of a CD in the icon, in this era of digital distribution...

Hello there, I just wanted to tell you that your request hasn't been forgotten ;). I'm going to try my luck on it, don't expect any wonders though o)
What sizes do you need for the installer?

This is a very rough and ready idea I had.

Image

Basically I was going for the (non - skewed) windows logo with a lid on it, and an icon in the middle. Not really sure if it works or not. But hell, it might scare an actual designer to come here and do a proper job. ;)

As it turns out making an installer icon is trickier than I had assumed, ;D.

I tried some ideas and come up with something here and there, though it's not much, sadly. I'm glad that I could base my efforts on Uri's excellent icons though.
These icons still have plenty of rough edges. So if you like one I'll work and said one to make it look better … I hope ;)

1.Image
I'm not too sure if this metaphor will work, because the arrow is basically pointing to nowhere, however it turned out that when I position the arrow somewhere else it'll look weird.

2.Image
Here I tried the same thing, but only with a background reminiscent of Window's Modern UI. I tried to convey the meaning that it's an installer for Windows. Personally I find it too look a bit busy, maybe I could tweak it a bit so it would look less busy.

3.Image
Here I tried to symbolise that something is installed by having an arrow figuratively point towards a hard drive. It's quite simple icon, however, how many people know what a hard drive looks like?

4.Image
A classical box metaphor with something being unpacked.

5.Image
The same boxed, but closed, to make the icon simpler. I just now see that the icon on the lower left needs a bit work, oh well. :|
By courtesy of Uri.

If someone else has some good ideas, please don't hesitate to come forward. I would appreciate it greatly :)

I like some of your images, for sure. By looking at them i had an idea:

What about a combination of icon 4 with icon 3 or 1:

the box can be cut a bit at the bottom, opening up space for a logo of a hard drive floating above it. The arrow points directly from the open box to the hard drive. (Or maybe to a computer monitor, like in 1)

something like Image. but it probably needs a lot of polish...

I think I could make 4&3 work. I'm not sure about 4&1, however.
I will try it out though, thanks for the suggestion! :)

Hi,

my 50cent for the Oxygen style. When you select one, I'll also make you the Breeze Icon.

1. KDE on Windows
2. KDE Package
3. Only Ktorrent
4.
5. Global KDE
6.
7. Execute KDE

Hi,

Apper already has similar icons in Oxygen style, look at /usr/share/apps/apper/icons/. There is also the Apper icon itself.
Where is this going to be used ? There are at least three possible places : the Start menu, the window border & taskbar icon, and inside the application.
It would also be possible to re-use the icon of the application being installed, so the user is already familar with it.

At the moment, here is what some installers do :
* Firefox uses some generic "installer" icon
* LibO uses either the old standard "installer" icon or an icon similar to Writer's, with an arrow pointing down inside of it
* MS Office uses its own icon
* Photoshop uses the Adobe icon
