Since I saw you like the gear in two pieces in Ken's proposal, I tried to mix it with my logo, using 2 pieces but maintaining the Sun :)

I think the gears are quite ok, for the framework, because they imply to me "some stuff under the hood". But I don't like them for plasma, because this is the user frontend, and gears are normally not visible to the end user.
My favorite is anditosan or Kvers adoption of it (Kver 4).

@alex

The appeal of the Kver's variation is that it does not make a full circle, while it (for me) still maintains the Sun idea. Making the full-circle with two pieces just looks strange.

I'm please to see so many options and re-mixes of the logos, may be all of these could be included as an "easter egg" in the plasma set for users to do what-ever they like with them :), It's always a good exercise to participate in the challenges and see what's the reaction to the ideas presented.

Alex, I saw you teasing my logo, saying is only good for the Kwin :P I deserve it for giving you a hard time first time you presented yours on G+ :) ok then my three little squares are also KDE+Plasma+User, or the "objects" in c++ and qt, or anything that fit there :D.

For those who didn't catch it, on G+ Alex mentioned how he is pursuing a symmetric design thus the complete circle/gear, (I think still that your simple gear (thin one) is a stronger contender than the one you presented here, but that is my very personal opinion), the only caveat with the gears as we mentioned on those conversations was the "hard-coded in our heads" of the "settings" icons, and how on the utility side (as an desktop icon) could be misinterpreted as the icon to open the system settings or such, there I also tried a re-mix of my own with Alex's idea of the sun (as seen below), thus "settings icon" was my reason why I tried to avoid the gears (even if I like it for branding), Other problem with suns may be its similarity to weather apps icons.

To me the challenge is to try to put together a branding logo with an utility icon, something that doesn't change the perception from when presenting the Plasma desktop (usually big graphics, by itself or along the title) to when the icon is used on the dashboard or panel where simplicity is ask for, yes I know, I likely didn't make much sense with my design, but it was fun and educational to try, :)

I think all submissions are good designs, opens a lot of doors to new ideas, here it is another re-mix just for fun (kidding around)

smash everything in one

and I call this quiralta's ego :P

It seems that the half gear here is anchored in the small circle. If this was intended it is an interesting approach :)

Well, the small circle and the inner gear circle is Anditosan design, I just add the gear part from Alex/KDE to the side, with some Kver mix inspiration :)

Note: Forgot to mention that those last logos I placed last, is just me kidding around (smash everything and quiralta's ego) nothing was intended there.

The contest description says
"It has to be the author's original work", which Ken's mashups are in violation of. However, Alex L especially stated that edits of his proposal are welcome, so those are fine.

As far as the modifications of anditosan's logo are concerned: Andy, would you be okay with modifications of your work to enter the contest?

@colomar

While it is nice of you to have asked Andy this, I do think Ken's work is original.

Namely, he used the idas to create something of his own. It is not like gears and circles and '>' have never been seen before, to make this distinction.

Thank you guys for making that clarification about original work. I think it is important, in the world for graphics, to be clear about that. I don't discard the ideas, rather, I feel there is value in considering that one puts in the hours into creating a concept.

@anditosan

Sorry dude, I seem to be more liberal than most people when it comes to these things. :)

So, would it be ok for us to consider derivations of your work?

Hey Ivan, thanks for asking. At this time, I want to keep that logo as is, without drastic modifications. Maybe one can make the argument that including more elements has a background and a reason. But at this point, I want to keep this logo the same. I am open to making drastic changes in the future but not right now. I in fact considered many of the different variations that have been proposed here even before I posted the logo and I was never happy enough with the results.

Please post both a logo variant (i.e. as big as makes sense to you) as well as a 22x22px monochromatic icon variant (since it would also be used as the icon for application launchers)

About the sizes:
- as Icon I need 22x22px (default), 16x16px and maybe 32x32px
- as Logo it is needed in 128x128px, 256x256px, and maybe 64x64px
please use the padding from the other icons.

It has been a while, but I spent some time looking at and being inspired by all the amazing work that has been submitted and the great feedback provided here. I also spent some time doing a bit of research into recent modern, digital logo design efforts. The result I propose is below:

The result I hope is instantly recognizable while being fresh and forward looking. It is also, I hope, a good representation of community design that I believe can produce a good result when we work collaboratively in the open.

It is available in both logo and icon sizes requested:

@alake I like it

Sadly, it is late to the party. After the design contest ended (despite that none of the proposals were accepted) it was decided not to prolong it, but the old Uri's logo was chosen as the Plasma logo.

Now, for alternative plasma themes, this might be a nice choice - it looks really nice in the panel. I'm thinking whether to add it to slim-glow when I finally take some time to update it.

Thanks much Ivan. :-)

No worries. If the plasma team ever decides to revisit the logo again at least this will be here for you to consider. The switch to the current plasma logo for the application launcher and its appearance on the panel is what initially prompted this revisit by me. Certainly, feel free to use this in any of your excellent plasma themes!
