Second screen still detected when HDMI unplugged

When I plug the HDMI connector, the second screen is correctly detected and working, normally in extended screen mode. But, when I unplug it, the screen is still detected as it was plugged, for example, I can move the mouse to the right and it disappears as neon thinks is in the second monitor, which in fact is unplugged.

Any ideas?

That's crazy...who would unplug their second monitor?? WHY??? My second monitor is essential to my existence!!
;D

Sorry couldn't resist...not sure why that would happen. The driver should detect that the monitor is no longer present. When you go in to System Settings, Display and Monitors what does it show when you unplug it? Does the second screen still show as connected?

My "second" monitor is my TV which I plug when I want to see something in a bigger screen.
Anyway, I have done the plug-unplug process with the "Monitors" dialoge box open, and this is what it looks like:

Before HDMI plugging: only 1 screen is shown - :)
HDMI plugged: two screens showed and "active" - :)
HDMI unplugged: two screens showed and "active" - :'(

Update-16/2/17: I found this also occurs on other desktops and distros, so I guess is a kernel problem. Tested on linux mint 18.1 Mate

I run a dual screen setup and I find HDMI on the second screen is slower to respond to changes. My primary is on displayport though, so maybe that's why it works here.
