Current kernel version 5

Fri Jul 12, 2019 7:20 am
Hi community,

is it advisable to install the kernel 5.0 in Neon already or are there reasons not to do so? Has any of you already got the kernel 5.0 running and what are the experiences?

There have already been some versions of the kernel 5.0 in the official Ubuntu repository.
Code: Select all
$ apt-cache search linux-image-5.*-generic
linux-image-5.0.0-15-generic - Signed kernel image generic
linux-image-5.0.0-16-generic - Signed kernel image generic
linux-image-5.0.0-17-generic - Signed kernel image generic
linux-image-5.0.0-19-generic - Signed kernel image generic
linux-image-5.0.0-20-generic - Signed kernel image generic

I've been using 5.0.0-20-generic in the past few days. i haven't encountered any issues/oddities so far.
Code: Select all
$ neofetch --off
bobby@neon-ge62-6qd
-------------------
OS: KDE neon User Edition 5.16 x86_64
Model: GE62 6QD REV:1.0
Kernel: 5.0.0-20-generic
Uptime: 5 hours, 6 mins
Packages: 4599 (dpkg), 6 (snap)
Shell: zsh 5.4.2
Resolution: 1920x1080, 1366x768
DE: KDE
WM: KWin
WM Theme: Materia-Dark
Theme: Materia Dark [KDE], Materia-dark [GTK2/3]
Icons: Papirus-Dark [KDE], Papirus-Dark [GTK2/3]
Terminal: alacritty
Terminal Font: Monospace
CPU: Intel i7-6700HQ (8) @ 3.500GHz
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M
GPU: Intel HD Graphics 530
Memory: 6613MiB / 15920MiB

Browser, Java thingies, gaming with nvidia-xrun, etc. worked as well as they used to in kernel 4.18.

Installation:
Code: Select all
sudo apt install linux-image-5.0.0-20-generic linux-headers-5.0.0-20 linux-headers-5.0.0-20-generic linux-modules-5.0.0-20-generic linux-modules-extra-5.0.0-20-generic

I actually forgot to install linux-modules-extra once, and ended up with no networking drivers, lul.
Fortunately older kernel was still installed so I didn't have to boot into a recovery usb or whatever.

HWE edge is probably a "better" method for installing kernels cause it should make the kernels upgradable should there be any updates (as oppposed to installing a specific version with the method above). But I don't use HWE's X stack cause I'm using X drivers from Padoka's PPA, so I figured I'd rather not use HWE for kernels either.

Hi bobbywibowo,
Thank you for your feedback on installing kernel 5.0. Then I will install the kernel 5.0.

Hi,
I have the same problem and claydoh, a Registered Member wrote the follwing in order to solve the problem.

You will need to enable https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack.
If Neon hasn't modified how Ubuntu does this, it is not enabled on the first 'point' releases of the 18.04 ISO (18.04 and 18.04.1), but is enabled by default in the newer images. So, if your setup is a bit older, you do not automatically get this. I saw discussion somewhere on whether or not Neon were going to enable this for all installs, but I can't find it, and I don't think that I saw any decision on it. Luckily it is an easy thing to do.

Regards,
