Brightness settings on Laptop

Tue Nov 11, 2008 2:51 am
I was just wondering if there was an applet or plasmoid that controlled the brightness settings.

When im on KDE 4.1 on my laptop, and its not connected to power, it dims the screen to conserve power, id rather than i had the brightness full, or adjusted to an amount that I like. Is there any easy way to do this? I know that on gnome that there is a brightness applet for the taskbar, something like that would be nice.

I believe the currently existing battery applet has been given a overhaul for 4.2 to fix this, integrating with PowerDevil to do it.

If you are running OpenSuSE and are using the KDE:KDE4:Factory repository, then you already have some of that functionality. Just click on the battery applet. Note that this is not available in Vanilla KDE 4.1.

I am using Ubuntu 8.10, I installed KDE and tryed it out, everything was good except for the brigness factor, if there are no applets to do this, is there any configuration are i can do it in? Most of the time I use the laptop is on battery power, I recharge it every night.

As long as were on the subject, how close to feature parity will KDE 4.2 be compared to 3.5?

I am thinking about setting up a simple wiki style page that has the out of the box features that 3.5 had and their direct translations available or unavailable in KDE 4.

There is the KDE Userbase (http://userbase.kde.org) a Wiki website waiting for your constribution. :-)

A good start on what you want to do is http://userbase.kde.org/Tutorials/KDE3toKDE4

If you have powerdevil installed ( your distro may have shipped it by default and enabled it ) you can look in System Settings > Advanced (Tab) > System > Power Management. you will find plenty of options in there for power management, assuming that no other power manager is currently running.

In the case of wanting brightness at 100% when running on battery, select the "Edit Profiles" side tab, and there should be a list of profiles, with one probably called "Powersave". select that, then select the screen option on the right side. You should find a brightness option on that side, change it to whatever you want, then click apply.

If you are using a different power manager such as KPowerSave then the steps should be similar, apart from they will be through the settings of that power manager.

@Zues: Kubuntu 8.10 ships guidance-powermanager with a KDE systray applet (which will be dropped in favor for PowerDevil in 9.04) which is able to control the power settings. Simply clicking on the applet in the systray brings up the settings dialog where you can set the screen brightness for battery powered and ac powered mode. Anyways, on my notebook the brightness buttons also worked out of the box with Intrepid.

Update: The systray applet is called kde-guidance-powermanager, just in case it is not running on your machine.

I'm also using Ubuntu 8.10 and can use my brightness keys on the keyboard without runnig guidance. I replaced it with powerdevil that works just fine.
So, I didn't have to configure anything at all.
