Ctrl+Alt+Del

Wed Nov 19, 2008 10:28 pm
Hi,

How do I switch to another application when one application has input focus?

E.g. lets say I start ETQW (game) in full screen mode. I realize that I have Amarok still running and want to exit it.

In Windows I would press Alt+Ctrl+Del or the "windows key" to escape the application focus and then select the application I want to exit and press the 'x'. I can even save any unsaved data or continue working with the application.

In Linux/KDE I could press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to enter the console and kill the application, but that is outside KDE, not a newbie friendly way and I may want to save the application data before exit. And this only works if I want to exit the other application, what if I want to continue working with it?

You could try alt-tab'ing to the other window. Or you could also activate the desktop grid or cube effect.

Thanks for the fast reply, but the application has keyboard focus. The Alt+Tab will be send to, in this case ETQW, which does nothing. I'm not sure but I believe that the same is true for Windows as well.

But, if I understand Windows correctly, the C-A-D command cannot be exclusively consumed by any application but reach the OS as well. E.g. pressing C-A-D in VMWare (in Windows) will bring up the process manager both for the host and for the guest OS.

Is there any similar command that is guaranteed to reach KDE and that will make it possible to switch applications?

I use those tricks with fullscreen Wine apps. Sorry they didn't work out for you.

I haven't found a way, so I usually play games in a different session (also partly because I don't want useless stuff running in the background, so I start it from an empty X with an xterm)

I solved that problem for me with enabled composite in kde4 with the actions in the edge of the desktop, so when I'm using for example a VM in full-screen mode I just put the mouse-cursor in the edge which shows the desktops or all apps and so I could change the focused windows. Maybe that works for games in full-screen mode too.
