Plasma 5 - Notes

Fri Nov 16, 2018 1:50 pm
on my old machine running LM 17.3 KDE I use on each activity a note from the Notes widget.

In a newly installed PC, I successfully could add the KDE desktop environment on top of LM 19.0 Cinnamon and I hope the KDE desktop environment will become available again.

However, when I wanted to add the widget Notes I could not find it even when I tried to download it.

How can I get this widget?

Your help is highly appreciated.

You may need to install the plasma-widgets-addons package to get the Notes widget (among others)

Thanks for your reply.
I tried the button "get new widgets" but there I could not find them as well.
Where can I download and install the widgets I need?
Thanks for your help!

You'd use your distribution's package manager (e.g. apt, synaptic, muon) to install the plasma-widgets-addons package

From the command line you should be able to run:
sudo apt install plasma-widgets-addons

Thanks a lot for this additional and helpful information. I did not know that there is such a package.
I installed the package and then found via Add Widgets the notes I was looking for.

2 issues:

1. I cannot login anymore - I will ry to solve this via the Mint Forum
2. I don't need so many widgets, how can I install only the widgets I would like (Notes and Folder)

Additiional question: In my LM17.3 KDE installation the folder widget is translucent. In Plasma 5 it has a grey color. Is there also a translucent folder or how can the grey backgroud changed to translucent?

Thanks for your ongoing support!

In order to install just the widgets you wanted, you'd need to open up the package and pull out the files for the widgets you wanted and copy them to the right places. (though I'd just leave them as you can always use the search bar to filter down to the widget(s) you're interested in).

For changing the color of the notes, click on the settings icon for the widget (should be in the lower-right corner, or you can click-and-hold on the widget to reveal the handle bar which has the settings icon as well), and the main settings page allows you to select the colors for that note. Translucent is one of the available options.

Thanks for the additional information.

As I am a newbie in these things following questions rose now.

Condition I only want to take out the few widgets I need and don't want to install the entire package. Without an installation of the entire package I want to avoid another look up of my system.
Q1 - how can I get the package?
Q2 - how can I open the package and where (folder) do I have to place them

Any additional hint is highly welcome.

I guess it's up to you to decide if having the reduced set of things installed is worth the extra work to pull out just the stuff you want. (really, I'm doubtful that you'll notice much impact from having the extra widgets installed - 5 MB of disk space is a drop in the bucket on most systems).

You should be able to download the package (either pre-built or source) from https://packages.ubuntu.com/trusty/kde/ ... ets-addons
The pre-built packages are listed at the bottom of the page, pick the one which matches the cpu architecture of your system.
The packages are just zip files. You can open them up in the file manager or in ark.
Reviewing the file list, I'd guess you'd just need to extract the following files to those same locations in your file system (as root).
/usr/lib/kde4/plasma_applet_notes.so
/usr/share/kde4/apps/desktoptheme/default/widgets/notes.svgz
/usr/share/kde4/services/plasma-notes-default.desktop

Actually, that package would be for Linux Mint 17.3 (based on Ubuntu Trusty).
The package for Mint 19 (based on Ubuntu Bionic) would be: https://packages.ubuntu.com/bionic/kde/ ... ets-addons
The layout of the files is different. I think you'd need all of the files with "notes" in the name.
