Actually, it turns out the problem arises on the new user account also. It just takes longer to appear when there are few windows open or few previous opens and closes of kde applications. With the system monitor on, I see that when konsole opens and closes properly, a single process appears on the monitor. When it hangs, three processes start, all named "konsole". When the konsole window displaying the red error message is closed, one of the konsole processes remains active, though not associated with any window. While that process is active, attempting to start konsole via an icon-click does not open any window. If that residual process is killed, konsole will open properly with an icon-click --- for a while, after which the bad behavior returns.

In this case, assuming all the latest package updates have been installed, and no dependencies are broken, please file a bug with your distribution, as I have never been able to reproduce this.

Killing all running konsole processes fixes the issue temporarily. I dont know the konsole internals but it seems a hanging konsole process is causing this.

I've got the same problem on Arch Linux. I'm running KDE 4.4.4. My arch linux is up to date.

Has anyone figured this out yet? I think it's a bug.

As reported above, I had this problem with Ubuntu, 64 bit, KDE 4.4.2. I was running KDE under the gdm display manager. I have since switched to kdm, and since that switch the problem has not recurred.

produces nothing on my system, which is archlinux.

I arrived to this thread after having the same konsole error when starting it from an icon in the Desktop which tells konsole to run a bash script.

In case it can help solve the problem for somebody, I solved the problem inserting the following line at the beginning of the bash script:

Without this line, konsole gives the same error described in this thread.

Yes, it also happens the very same thing to me. If you press Alt+F2, click on the "System activity" icon and type "konsole" in the filter, you'll see, at least, two konsole processes. One having the default konsole icon which is the process attached to the Konsole window that shows the red message. The other one is like a zombie process that screws everything up. So, if you close the Konsole window, you'll see the former terminates. Afterwards, you can kill the other konsole process. Now you should be able to start konsole normally seamlessly.

Another workaround I found is to open Dolphin. Then press F4 to open an integrated konsole and type "konsole&". This will open an independent Konsole window. Afterwards, you can press F4 again to close the Dolphin integrated konsole.

Your issue seems to be different. Please try reproducing under a new user. If you cannot reproduce, remove ~/.kde4/share/apps/konsole/

Try this, was the solution for me

open another terminal *not konsole and go to /bin
$ cd /bin
and
$ sudo chmod 777 bash

now try to open Konsole. Must work right now, because the trouble was about the permision to load /bin/bash

Note that 777 permissions (rwxrwxrwx) are very dangerous for a system-wide executable. 755 would be more appropriate (rwxr-xr-x)

The error happens just sometimes, so its difficult to reconstruct it.
The error happens on my PC, on my notebook (same os) this happens never.

The access rights of /bin/bash are already: -rwxr-xr-x
Changing this will not help, i think.

There is no .kde4 folder in my home, but a .kde!

I will try to delete .kde/share/apps/konsole
