I'm not sure where to ask this question, but here it is:

The task bar at the bottom of my screen suddenly diasppeared and I can't
find how to restore it. I'm referring to the strip that has a button
for each open window plus quick launch buttons, clock, etc. as in Windoze.

If I right-click on the desktop, there's a Configure Desktop... item,
but nothing there refers to the task bar. I found 'Menu Bar at Top
of Screen', but that's not the same functionality.
Without the task bar, I'm having great trouble navigating among windows.
How do I get it back?

Sounds like you're using KDE 3.5.x - is this correct? What happens if you run 'kicker' in a terminal?

Oh, and just a general tip: you can navigate between windows with alt+tab (alt+shift+tab reverse direction).

Alternatively you could play around with the GUI (assuming KDE4) - right click on the desktop - add new panel. Then click on the new panel's kidney and select "add widgets". You are now free to create your own new shiny taskbar to your heart's content.

Yes -- I should have said I'm running KDE 3.5.
Running kicker in a terminal has no effect -- that is to say it doesn't
show anything on the screen.

Could you please paste the output from the terminal here?

You could try removing the Kicker configuration if you are not attached to it.

I'm still unable to get this working again, and I'm not quite ready to upgrade to KDE 4.
Where do I find the settings that control what appears on the desktop?

Try these commands, in the order shown:

I have the same problem. I killed the kicker. Removed the ~/.kde/share/apps/kicker directory, and started again with kicker & command.

The taskbar appeared! But, if it is auto hided down, never appeared again.

So the kicker is running, it is working corectly, but if hide automatically never appear again. Can't sense the mouse pointer position???

If I start a new session or reboot, the problem is the same.

The problem was resolved. Kicker worked well. But, the settings of the taskbar changed sometimes. But why?

Unfortunately the KDE 3.x series is being retired. At this time, no further releases are planned.

The change in settings was likely due to corrupt or damaged configuration files.
