Two file.protocol files located under /usr/share

First located /usr/local/services

reading=true
writing=true
makedir=true
deleting=true
linking=true
moving=true
maxInstances=4
DocPath=kioslave/file.html
Class=:local

Second located under /usr/share/kde4/services
Code: Select all
[Protocol]
exec=kio_file
protocol=file
Icon=folder

Have you at some point installed KDE locally? The /usr/local/services/file.protocol file shouldn't exist in a normal system. If it is not provided by a package, it should be safe to move it elsewhere. Then logout and login again.

So sorry my error on the path the two locations are:

/usr/share/services/file.protocol
/usr/share/kde4/services/file.protocol

I will assume from your previous message the file located in the kde4 directory is the correct one and will attempt to move the other file and see what happens.

Edit:
Rebooted for good measure no issues logging in but error still persists. :-\

Searched /usr/share again for file.protocol files and now only 1 exists at /usr/share/kde4/services/.

Can you please check for "file.protocol" files in your Home directory? In particular in ~/.local or ~/.kde*

Unfortunately I don't know why this occurs. I do know that the KSycoca is rebuilt on login, so you may need to add "kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental" to your Autostarted apps. This can be done by creating a script in ~/.kde/Autostart/

Thanks for your help bcooksley your a legend for the help you have provided.

Unfortunately adding the kbuildsycoca4 command to the autostart does not help with the error.

I have created a small script the run the entire set of commands you provided initially that fixes the error, so I just have to execute this after each restart.

One thing that I find a little strange is when I run kdeinit4 it halts at the point below and waits for me to press enter:
Code: Select all
[email protected]:~$ kdeinit4: Shutting down running client.
Connecting to deprecated signal QDBusConnectionInterface::serviceOwnerChanged(QString,QString,QString)
KDE Daemon (kded) already running.
kbuildsycoca4 running...
kbuildsycoca4(2442) KConfigGroup::readXdgListEntry: List entry MimeType in "/usr/share/applications/wine.desktop" is not compliant with XDG standard (missing trailing semicolon).

After pressing enter I get the final result:
Code: Select all
[1]+  Done                    kdeinit4
[email protected]:~$

Don't know if that points to anything??

Thanks again for your help I can at least use KDE after running the commands which is great because I really love KDE! ;D

This is because kdeinit4 will have forked itself, and the process which you initially started has quit. This is normal behaviour for a background daemon or KUniqueApplication app such as System Settings.
