Konsole - shortcut not working

Wed Oct 26, 2011 9:24 pm
Hello,

I'm new in all those linux thing so please remember that :)

I have installed Ubuntu 11.04 but I hated Unity and Gnome so I installed KDE and now I have one big problem - I can't find what is keyboard shortcut to open Konsole. In gnome I used Terminal with ctrl+alt+T, in KDE it should probably by default be ctrl+T but none of it is working.

I know I probably should installed Kubuntu with KDE and not Ubuntu with stupid Gnome, but it's too late for that..

Help please and thanks in advance :)
Katie.

Welcome to KDE! By "keyboard shortcut to open Konsole", do you want to start Konsole by pressing a keyboard combination? The most easy way is to right click on the application launcher ("start menu") -> Edit Applications... -> Browse to Konsole -> click on Advanced tab -> Current shortcut key. I would advise against using Ctrl+T since it's usually used to open a new tab in applications.

A more advanced keyboard shortcut manager can be found in System Settings -> Shortcuts and Gestures -> Custom Shortcuts.

By the way, installing Ubuntu and then installing the KDE packages (I think the package is called kubuntu-desktop or something similar) isn't much different from installing Kubuntu directly - Ubuntu and Kubuntu both share the same base, it's the software they're shipped with by default that differs.

Hans is right, basically Ubuntu and Kubuntu are same operating system, with different packages preinstalled

Thank you very much for welcome and help. Now my Konsole is working with shortcut :) But now I am wondering, is there a way to create a shortcut which open K menu in bottom panel by pressing key "windows" or "meta" or how to name it?

It doesn't work with the Meta key though, since it's a modifier key. I know a workaround for this but I'm not sure if you can use it as a Meta key anymore after that (probably not). That means that shortcuts involving the Meta key, e.g. Meta+Tab to switch activities, won't work anymore.

Still interested in hearing the workaround belli?

You are right, only meta key is not working :(

No, I don't want workaround, I need my meta key for other things. I will use meta + something.

Thank you both very much :)
