Hello fellow kde devs & users!

There is an active discussion going on around this bug:

Bug #268641

The problem in question is adding an option to disable the "+" overlay button in the FolderView applet, in analogy with the existing "Click to view folders" option.

So, to really get the option in, we need to demonstrate that this option is valuable to a solid part of the KDE user community. To do this, I've created this poll here.

Opinions welcome! :)

I voted "Yes" because I rarely use Folder View to organize files, it's much more important for me to be able to easily open files and folder than to select them.

On the other hand, the option can be seen as redundant since the (+) doesn't do much harm for fairly large icons. In that case maybe https://git.reviewboard.kde.org/r/104413/ is enough.

I voted yes even though I have recently begun using the markers quite a bit. I find their functionality helpful, but for those who prefer not to have them, I can see that an option to turn them off would be nice as well. KDE is an extremely elegant desktop and I could imagine someone turning off these markers to make it even more elegant.

Beyond that, it would be great if dolphin could honor the automatic selection of icons when it is enabled in the system settings too.

Just my personal 2 cents:
KDE (despite many other desktop environments) is arguably associated by most users to be about choice before anything else (for example simplicity). Selection markers shown or hidden is a rather visible choice the user should be able to make, as it affects him so often in its basic daily use. If the choice is already available, why not allow the user to let him (or distros for that matter) decide?

Also generally how the +/- signs are presented: As for any (overlay) stuff magically appearing, that can be perceived by quite some users as a disturbing way of show/hide things (as google once demonstrated with its "blend in other stuff upon mouse-movement" javascript effect...)
So despite any argument of usefulness or not, it could be just the effect itself is highly annoying to some users and therefore those who like a classical desktop and therefore choosing folderview but still opt for singleclick feature (to be consistent through whole KDE) may be diminished their joy just for being irritated every time they see the +/-signs although they do not want to use it.

Yes! That thing is always getting in the way, and I've never needed it.

i also voted yes.

although i have never had a problem with the "+" myself. one of the best things about kde is that is <something> is not setup how you like it, there are options to change the behavior.

i would make two simple changes:

1. system settings -> workspace behavior gets a new checkbox "show selection indicators" (enabled by default).

2.any application (including plasma) should check that this is enabled and that icon_size >=32px. before adding the "+". why 32px? well i just tested in dolphin and an icon with a size of 32px ends up w/ the "+" taking up 1/4 the icons size to me that just seams to be enuff but not to much space used by it.

Is the question one of: should Folder Views follow some global option for showing or hiding the '+' which also controls Dolphin (and other clients of the file view kpart) in the same way or not; or is it one of: should there be a new option specific to Folder Views, separate from the option which controls Dolphin (et al)? If it is the former then my answer is Yes, if it is the latter then my answer is No - we should provide a consistent experience across the various file views, and I don't see the need to have per-folder view options, or an option specifically for folder views (in addition to a global setting which affects all file views).

@airdrik:
I guess it would make sense to have the "show selection markers" options "combined" for folderview and dolphin in one global setting as you suggested.

I am afraid though, that KDE users might end up loosing the option then completely (even in dolphin), as there seems to be a tendency to make certain assumptions and cut down such userchoices.

Hence your suggestion could lead to +/- signs not possible to being enabled or disabled at all, and rather become the "fixed" default of either single/doubleclick view.

Loosing that option (for dolphin and folderview) would mean
- people who like to use the markers also in doubleclick-mode can't and
- people who dislike can't disable them in singleclick.

KDE has always been held in high regard as ultimately configurable. I have voted for the option.

I use small folderviews for remote drives, with tiny icons, and single-click. I find it infuriating when I accidentally trigger this selection behaviour. I acknowledge that it may be useful to other users, so the on/off option is the obvious answer.

I think we miss the point here, "+" sign was from the begging made as a "selection without need of ctrl key", and it's probably vital with touch screens/plasma active. So it's not bind to one-click/double-click mouse behavior.

It's KDE, it's user choice, make it as an option and everyone will be happy!

this is already addressed by automatically not showing the + icon when it would occlude the actual icon.

In theory that sounds good. In practice, some of us have less than perfect sight, some have slightly shaky hands, and some of us never have had complete mouse control. I suppose it's a matter of accessibility. I still believe that for a significant number of people it would be helpful if the feature was optional.
