[Solved] Canon USB Camera shows as non-removeable

Now I have found setting device notifier to show all devices I see that my camera is now considered non-removeable which I do not believe to be correct.

The camera is a Canon SX10IS and shows up as

Code: Select all
Device Added:
udi = '/org/kde/solid/udev/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:12.2/usb1/1-5/1-5.2'

using solid-hardware when it is added. I am aware that there is another similar thread on this topic but with a different camera but there is no solution.

Digikam and Gwenview both handle the camera just fine, however if I click on file manager in device notifier I get an error in from Dolphin 'Unknown error bad parameters' and it wont start, but if I start dolphin manually and use camera:/ as a location it does indeed open the camera OK.

Is there any more information I can get to help change this back to removeable?

Stuart

Does Dolphin when launching indicate what protocol is being opened? If not, could you try setting Konqueror as your preferred file browser and try testing it again?

Konqueror works fine and opens the camera OK, so I guess this might be a Dolphin bug.

The main thing I'd like to fix is changing the camera to be removable ....

Changing the camera to being removable will be in the UDev area i'm afraid. KDE simply follows what UDisks/UDev inform it of concerning the device.

Any advice on how to get this changed would be greatfully received....

Are you sure your camera uses USB Storage (in that case it would be like a flash memory) or instead uses MTP/PTP? Both things appear in the device notifier, but only Digikam and similar programs use it.

Can you install "gphoto2" and from a terminal, type

Code: Select all
gphoto2 --auto-detect

with the camera attached and report the output here?

Output of gphoto2 --auto-detect is

Code: Select all
Model                         Port
----------------------------------------------------------
Canon PowerShot SX10 IS        usb:001,005

I must re-iterate that until some change in the past couple of months or so the camera used to appear in the device notifier the settings of which I have never before played with and only showed removable devices.

Stuart

PS. I just checked using my JVC Everio Hard Disc Camcorder and that shows up as removable just fine so not all devices have changed.

PPS Also checked the conection specs of my Canon SX10IS which shows as Hi-Speed USB (Mini-B, MTP, PTP).

MTP and PTP, I see. So not USB storage per se: I am then not sure if showing it earlier was a bug. It may be that Solid rules to handle hardware have changed. Can you check the device actions control panel in System Settings?

Something very strange has happened. I was sure that Device Actions showed camera as an option for Digikam but now it does not, only storage volume. Gwenview has two entries one for Storage Volume and the other for Camera. If I set Device Notifier to show all devices it does show Digikam as an option for the camera as well as Gwenview and File Manager.

It's possibly a regression, but I'm not sure which bit in the stack is at fault.

The change from removable to non-removable will be a distribution regression, you will need to ask them unfortunately.

Bumping with good news: the developer has committed a fix and PTP cameras will show again as removable in the 4.8.3 release of the KDE Workspaces.

I can confirm today that after updating to 4.8.3 the camera is back as a removable device now.
