Have just made a clean re-install of Ubuntu 12.04 - OK
Then installed kde desktop - OK
Then logged out but not shown a choice, just come back to Ubuntu desktop.
Ran "sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop" in Terminal, result kubuntu-desktop already installed
Any help would be appreciated

Do you mean that you don't have any choices on the login screen? You may want to try to switch to KDM, as far as I know the command is

    sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm

and then you choose kdm in the list.

Tried that and the result is:-
Package `gdm' is not installed and no info is available.
Use dpkg --info (= dpkg-deb --info) to examine archive files,
and dpkg --contents (= dpkg-deb --contents) to list their contents.
/usr/sbin/dpkg-reconfigure: gdm is not installed.

Does this mean that Plasma is not installed?

I logged out again. Saw a small icon top left in login form - clicked it and was then presented with a choice of desktops!
Simple isn't it? (or perhaps I am!)
