All applications in Kubuntu have accelerator keys - except the application launcher. I'd like to be able to open the application launcher and type my way through sub-menus (each activated with one keystroke) to the application I want and launch it with one keystroke. This should make my favorites launchable by tapping the Meta key + the first letter of the application name (as long as there aren't multiple applications beginning with the same letter).

I get what you're suggesting - kind of when you are on an app and you press "Alt" and all possible key actions are shown with an underline under certain letters. But remember with KDE you can even skip app launcher - you just need to configure your custom shortcuts on System settings -> Keyboard Shortcuts (I guess that's how it's called in english versions) -> Global key shortcuts and click on the "+" icon to create your own shortcuts.

For example, since KDE4 I've always set Dolphin to launch with Meta + D; Kate with Meta + K; KCalc with Meta + C; KMail with Meta + M; Compose a new mail with KMail with Meta + N; Konsole with Meta + T; System settings with Meta + P; Qupzilla with Meta + Q; and so on. That way you don't even have to move your mouse or call an app launcher - all your favourite apps are under your fingertips!

Yes, I have discovered that technique. It does require pressing 1 key and then tapping another. It has the advantage of not having a menu cover part of the screen. With accelerator keys in the launcher it would allow pressing one key at a time and give a visual menu.
