Way too many applications

Thu Oct 03, 2019 1:09 pm
I have only been experiencing Kubuntu Plasma for about a month now, so I am a knoob. ;)

There are way too many non-KDE applications.
It would be nice to see many condensed into a KDE applications where it makes sense.
An example would be managing sound cards and headphones. This is where I get lost.

Those already are, see System Settings -> Multimedia

Currently running Kubuntu 20.04, Plasma 5.18.5, Frameworks 5.68.0, Qt 5.12.8, kernel 5.4.0-42
FWIW: it is always useful to state the exact Plasma version and distribution when asking questions in this forum, makes it easier for us to help ...

Sorry for the late reply, life's been hectic lately.

There are too many programs dealing with sound.
Examples: phonon, alsa, pulseaudio, pavucontrol, pavumeter, hdajackretask, and assorted Terminal commands around the Internet.

Trying to solve sound problems is not easy ... for me anyway, I am new to Linux.

Sure would be nice to have an application offering most of the above programs' features.
And there are a few files dealing with sound: /etc/pulse/daemon.conf, /etc/pulse/default.pc, ~/./pulse/default.pa

You are not supposed to handle any of those, as these are the base layers of sound, not in the user space. All settings should be done through the System Settings, as alsa and pulseaudio (including pavucontrol) management are completely integrated into Plasma. Which distribution and Plasma version do you use?

Operating System: Kubuntu 19.04
KDE Plasma Version: 5.15.4
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.56.0
Qt Version: 5.12.2
Kernel Version: 5.0.0-31-generic
OS Type: 64-bit
Processors: 8 × Intel® Core™ i7-4790K CPU @ 4.00GHz
Memory: 31.4 GiB of RAM

I am trying to solve sound issues.

Through System/Settings/Multimedia and looking at the Phonon display it shows my Creative sound driver for Surround Sound 4.0
But there is no Surround Sound, just the two front speakers.

So people with sound issues are forced to use other programs to try and solve problems.

I suggest you file a bug against Phonon, then.

I posted the following solution for me in other forums as well as here.
I was able to get my sound working correctly.
Thanks for the attention Mamarok.
Thread closed/solved.

The secret weapons are:

in daemon.conf -------------------------------
avoid-resampling = false
enable-remixing = yes
remixing-use-all-sink-channels = yes
enable-lfe-remixing = yes
default-sample-rate = 48000
alternate-sample-rate = 48000
default-sample-channels = 6
default-channel-map = front-left,front-right,rear-left,rear-right,front-center,lfe

And using AlsaMixer correctly!
