Dragging file to Konsole

Wed Sep 09, 2009 7:10 pm
Many times you are working in a terminal (konsole) and suddenly you want to copy a file to the current directory you are in. The idea is: If you drag a file from Dolphin the user is presented with the options:

* "Paste file(s) path"
* "Copy file(s) to <DIRECTORY>"
* "Link file(s) to <DIRECTORY>"
* "Move file(s) to <DIRECTORY>"

<DIRECTORY> is replaced with the shells current working directory.

Dragging file to Konsole

I'm pretty sure this feature was present in the Konqueror + Konsole 3.5 days...
Maybe the code can then just be stripped and ported over to KDE 4.x.

Dragging file to Konsole

If the file is executable and the command-line is empty, then either run the file in the terminal or paste in the file path. I think the latter, so that you can add options, parameters, pipes, redirects, etc.

It seems the most useful thing is to paste the files path (full or relative).

If the file is not executable and the command-line is empty, then either run the associated program with the file as a parameter or link/copy/move to the shells pwd. I like the first, but perhaps paste in the associated program then paste in the file's path.

I think the gestures are:
drag a file or folder from a file-manager to the console/terminal window - move to pwd then paste in file-name,
Ctrl-drag - copy,
Shift-drag - move (maybe) or larger modifier,
Alt-drag - link,
AltGr-drag - link or link symbolic,
Ctrl-c - copy selected to clipboard,
Ctrl-x - cut selected to clipboard,
Ctrl-v - paste clipboard to selection,
Ctrl-z - undo,
Ctrl-y - redo.
If we use shift to make the action 'bigger' in some way:
Ctrl-c - copy the path of the file/folder to the clipboard,
Ctrl-Shift-C - copy the file/folder to the clipboard,
Ctrl-x - doesn't make sense - same as Ctrl-c
Ctrl-Shift-x - move the file/folder to the clipboard
Ctrl-v - paste the path to command-line or paste file/folder to the pwd,
Ctrl-Shift-v - paste the file/folder to the pwd.

This feature already exists in 4.3

drag the file to the konsole window and it pastes the full path to that file if you want to copy it to the knosoles current directory just put cp if front of it and ' .' (that is space dot) at the end. But maybe the CTRL, Shift and ALT modifiers doing something else would be useful?
