.tar.xz in ark

Sat Nov 21, 2009 1:30 pm
If you open a bzipped tarball in ark, it automatically decompresses and opens the tarball. If you open an xz'd(?) tarball, it opens it as xz compressed data, and then you have to open the tarball from inside it. I would like the ability to detect the tar data inside xz files integrated into ark.

I concur. I think support of this new format is a necessary step for any program that aims to be a relevant archive manager. On that topic, though, it seems that Ark is quite basic as far as feature-complete archiving tools go.

For a good example of what an impressive featureset looks like, I would instead refer to PeaZip. It has a Qt version, but it could be much more powerful with full KDE integration.

For the record: this has been fixed. See bug 218929 in Bugzilla.

The same also applies to tar.lzma files (bug 222779).

The changes will be present in KDE SC 4.3.5 and 4.4.0.
