Mint 12 KDE. Click on Trash can applet on desktop, get a popup titled "Error -- KIOExec" with this text: "Malformed URL trash:/". Mom always told me not to dig in the trash, but something tells me this isn't why.

Never mind. I deleted the trash db file (actually ALL files) in the ~/.local/share/Trash folder, and that seemed to solve the problem.

This was likely caused by a corrupt trash file. This happens on occasion for unknown reasons, but could be due to manual deletion, alteration or multiple applications modifying the Trash at the same time.

The method you followed was the correct one to fix the issue.

Thanks, bcooksley. I suspected as much, especially since I had just used another file manager tool (shan't happen again).

Hi,
I use openSUSE 13.2 and got the same error message. I deleted ~/.local/share/Trash/ but the problem persists.
EDIT: When I use the Wastebin shortcut from the left bar in Dolphin the Trash opens fine. It is the desktop applet which is not working.

in ~/.kde4/share/config there's a ktrashrc and trashrc file try renaming them (you'll need to reset your settings if you changed the defaults)

There is no ktrashrc on my system. The trashrc contained:
Code: Select all
[Status]
Empty=false

I deleted it, readded the Trash widget (this time to the panel and not the desktop). No success.

SOLVED. Here is what I have done:

I logged in with another user. There the Trash works. But it is opened with konqueror instead of dolphin. That lead to [1] (How can I set Dolphin to be the default file manager in KDE?). I went back to my regular user. In "Default Applications" --> File Manager I found that instead of Dolphin another app was selected as default component. I changed it back to Dolphin. This fixed the malformed URL issue.

I was a bit surprised, too. It was 'gitext-browse-master' (which is a script of mine to call the latest GitExtensions to browse the current directory). Recently I was experimenting with dolphin's Actions menu. I guess that I did something that changed the default.
