5.8 kernel - KDE Neon 5.21

Sun Feb 28, 2021 8:43 am
I'm thinking about buying a laptop with both amd CPU and GPU. But there are apparently problems with the GPU with kernel 5.4 that KDE neon user edition uses.

Currently the second point release of ubuntu 20.04 (20.04.2) uses kernel 5.8 https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2021/02/ubuntu-20-04-2-lts-released. I would like to know if KDE neon 5.21 user edition is planned be updated to a newer kernel. And if it is not planned, what are the risks of upgrading manually ?

Thanks

I am not sure when Neon will move to the 5.8 as the default kernel, the most current iso from this week has the 5.4. being based on 20.04, Neon will of course get whatever Ubuntu pushes out to Focal. Neon have followed the HWE patch previously, I just can't seem to find out out when they will update the build to match the 20.04.2 iso.

There is no risk of updating manually to 5.8, you even keep the 5.4 kernel alongside it, so you can choose a different one in Grub if needed.
It is really easy to add it --
Code: Select all
sudo apt install --install-recommends linux-generic-hwe-20.04

After that, you will get new major kernels periodically, approx every 6 months.

Exactly the problem I've been having. Have a new 4800H laptop, and Ubuntu/Kubuntu installers load up fine, but have to use the safe mode "nomodeset" which disables the GPU driver loading to get Neon installed. Likewise after install, it won't automatically load up SDDM, although logging in on the console and using "startx" works fine. After installing this particular kernel module, works great!
