Are you sure Firefox wasn't started before? Did you test it after a clean reboot?

I am using kubuntu 8.10 and I have to sadly admit that the same problem exists on my machine. I was told that this is sort of a distro-related problem, the person told me that kubuntu just isn't a very implementation of kde anyhow. Is it so? I am really thinking about trying one Mandriva or opensuse.
Well, I am lost.

I am seriously considering migrating to OpenSUSE as well. I'm fed up with (K)Ubuntu and their very own way of doing things... badly... For instance, in Ibex, the bluetooth stack is broken, but they released anyway... Screw them. So, I'm waiting for OpenSUSE 11.1 that should be released in mid-December.

Agreed. There always seems to be way too many distro-specific bugs in Kubuntu. And I don't think it was very smart to keep KDE4 AND KDE3 settings in .kde. That's bound to cause problems sooner or later. As far as OpenSUSE goes, I'm running the beta of 11.1 on my main machine right now. There are a couple of glitches here and there, but is generally rock-solid. That said, I will still do a clean install when it goes final since I've experimented quite a bit with this installation.

If you want to stick with an easy Debian like distro: I installed the latest MEPIS beta and then installed KDE4 from the Debian backports. It works splendidly!

Interestingly I get this problem running GNOME under ubuntu 8.10... but not KDE. My laptop has X3100 for graphics and I have not tweaked the X settings at all.

No more video garbage
Good news to all Kubuntu and Fedora users. The cause for the video garbage appearing whenever a new window is opened has been discovered. A custom patch to xorg is causing the trouble. Now we can only hope that the distributions will provide updates for xorg without this patch. If you don’t want to wait that long and you are a Kubuntu user just add the following ppa to your sources.list and upgrade your system:
The interesting thing is that NVIDIA knew about this patch for at least one month and started to work around it in their drivers. That’s great as it shows that they care about KDE and want to improve the KDE experience. The bad is that they did not communicate that a custom patch to xorg is responsible for the problem. Neither in KDE’s nor in Ubuntu’s bug report there is a comment from NVIDIA. And that’s sad. With a little bit more communication the problem would have been solved much earlier. http://blog.martin-graesslin.com/blog/?p=211 It's working perfect. ![]()

That patch exists for a reason--apparently without it performance is greatly affected on some systems. If you do notice slowdowns after you remove the patch please reply here with your graphics card and graphics driver version.

Removed the patch. Everything works great. No garbage, no slowdowns. My card: nVidia GeForce 6600

Don't bank on that helping. I have the same problem with my Radeon X1650.
Does the trick for me (Kubuntu 8.10, AMD-64, Radeon X1650. Thanks for the tip.

Gentoo | KDE4.2 | Nvidia
I seem to have fixed it by turning off Composite in /etc/X11/xorg.conf I was having problems with just after KDE4.2 was up and running. It looked like someone murdered KDE and got blood everywhere. The graphics mashed(as in the screen shot) and it even crashed a few times(the screen would go black and I had to press the power btn). Whenever I had the desktop effects on it was worse. First it would freeze up and then either go black or all the colors would distort. Or the odd time if I would resize a window, BAM froze -- screen went black! Anyways, after turning Composite off in my xorg.conf file it seems to have fixed it, I've been running it all day and it's working great. You just have to give up the fancy effects until the bug is fixed in a future version. This is what I did: # nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf From: ... Section "Extensions" Option "Composite" "Enabled" EndSection ... To ... Section "Extensions" Option "Composite" "0" EndSection ... Saved the file, restarted X and it seemed to work fine. Correct me if I'm wrong. BTW, I'm using nvidia's drivers and I run Gentoo.
