Story: I changed my OS from Kubuntu to fedora. my kubuntu was messed up and I thought it might be a good time to try something different. so I "cp" my home folder and installed Fedora. Then I tried to Import some of the data, like Kopete accounts. I failed. For some reasons I didn't want to "cp" all the data.

Idea: So I thought of an app or a module in systemsettings which would easily let me export and import my data. I would prefer if I could select which data I want to export.
It should include at least Kopete, KMail, Konqueror, all certificates/keys, kwallet passwords.
But here also there should be an option to select.
Kopete:
Profiles and Accounts
History
Settings

That way I can select what I don't want.

Import should provide equivalent options. Like maybe: "This file contains the following data. Select the ones you would like to import."

That would be really great.

There's a project for this called Kamion. Unfortunately, it's not (as far as I know) being developed anymore due to lack of maintainer.

Wow this is a great idea for transferring from one computer to a new one! Too bad that utility's not being updated :(

Proudly dual-booting openSUSE 11.1 with KDE 4.3 and Windows Vista on a Toshiba A205-S4577 since July 2007.

Sorry about the title.

I would write it myself if I had the knowledge and the time...

That program really looks like what I was asking for...
Bad it isn't developed

I did just that while migrating from Arch i686 to Arch x68_64...
It worked as a charm :D.
But still Kamion would be really cool.
So if anyone has Qt coding knowledge and time he / she / they can code it...

Didn't want to do that because I messed up my last system. Many beta software and that stuff. And I wanted to start new, but with my personal data. When copying ~/.kde you allways get configurations too. I didn't want to copy them. Only accounts, histories, mails and all that stuff. But as I have some problems on Fedora with suspending I will probably switch again and then I will try copying the hole .kde folder.

Just to clarify:

Different settings are stored in different file with standard paths/ file names?
User could do backup only contacts and emails, if he/she knows exactly what files to copy?

If so, backup tool is just a simple app that does some standard mv operations?
If so, does it take a lot of programing for creating a checkbox list form e.g .cvs file and performs such cp operations acconding info on it?
If so, the biggest task is creation of such list?

Most times this is the case.
But sometimes there have to be copied only a part of a file, like which account kopete has to start with (but I'm not sure about this) if you don't want to copy all information.

There would be a definite answer to that if somebody would know how this Kamion works.

The only way to perform the kind of backup you are after would be to have each individual application specify types of information and how to backup it up and restore it. This would require plugins for every single application. ( unless it was just KConfig based entries, then an XML file would be a possibility )

From http://ivan.fomentgroup.org/blog/2007/0 ... unior-job/
Kamion itself can not know what files to archive for a specific application. The application developers need to provide Kamion XML data files. I tried to push this format to the FreeDesktop but received no feedback whatsoever (although information needed by Kamion could be used for automatic creating of AppArmor/SELinux policies as well, and possibly for more things that I can not foresee at the moment). This is the main thing that needs to be done.

The general activity is really low. I overlooked the SVN statistic of sourcforge and simply saw nothing except me downloading the code.

It tried to comprehend the working of it but it really was beyond my skills. They even created several backends to be able to store the information in diffrent ways (sqlite, xml, sax...)

To me the gui seemed really organised and easy to use. So it's kind of a loss...

Kamion is great idea!

I urge Ivan (author of kamion) to make this project live at least for KDE system settings.
