Having set up my wife with a Linux laptop (after her getting fed up with Vista), she has pointed out many functionality issues. Her first problem is wanting to select several images that require shrinking for emailing (or uploading to a web service) as attachments.

I am guessing that this could be added as a suitable script to Dolphin, but for usability it would make a great addition to the default KDE desktop.

I agree that KDE needs a simple picture editor, but I don't know if Dolphin should be a primary application for it.
I tried Gwenview but it's ability to shrink pictures isn't what I hoped for.
Still I'll approve. 0 for now from me.

I don't even want to edit the photos - just an action menu item that launches a simple dialog that gives the option of batch shrinking the selected photos and either saving them to a new folder or attaching them to an email.

Yeah sorry that's what I meant.
Not the photo editing in "likes of Photoshop" just simple resizing of the photo.
And I do agree with.
So I'll give you +1

I agree about the idea to attach an image to email. But this can be extend about others file too. As I already suggested here, a good idea can be to implement in dolphin and konqueror (and in folder view?) the action to send a file by email via context menu.

+1

the application : digiKam can do all that and much much more :-)
and you can also add some ServiceMenu Actions to either Dolphin or Konqueror
like KIM and "Attach to Email"

Great!
So it this is in some way already done. Now the OP just have to try it and see if that's
what he wishes.

Well, until I get DigiKam 0.10 final, I cannot easily use it with my smb photo share (waiting for the Fedora repos to update). But for a basic user (like my wife), they want to do things like this from Dolphin using preview (as you can in XP/Vista/Mac) without knowing about additional applications.
And I agree that a ServiceMenu action is probably all that is needed, but I feel that it should actually be a part of the default setup, it needs to handle the picture shrinking automatically (with a option to select quality/size), and cope with multiple selected images.

As this would be useful to any KDE file manager, the idea has been updated and tagged.

at least the first post (resizing images for mailing) is related to the following bug:
