Hello,
I would like to lay emphasis on an idea which has been mentioned in this forum before. What do you think of implementing an embedded solution for fingerprint readers under KDE 4? A uniform interface for kdm, sudo, kwallet, even for asking ssh-passphrases would be really helpful! I have already found a promising project by Wolfgang Ullrich (http://www.pdfserver.net/fingerprint). However, there seems to be a rather old problem with PAM integration in KDM. It would be really nice to get this fixed.

There has already been a proposal for GSoC 2009 that would involve refactoring KDM to use a plugin based system, allowing password, fingerprint, voice, smart card, etc. authentication.

That's good news!
It would be indeed a good idea to implement a general authentication solution. I mean why do I have to type in my password twice, once for kdm-login and once for the kwallet? It is most uncertain, that the user changes in this short span of time. Why not somehow forward the kdm-authentication to kwallet? Concerning different types of authentication (password, fingerprint, voice, ocular scanning and so on...), it would be nice to have a gui where you can choose, which authentication methods are required for login (maybe even a combination of those). |
