Help with the KWord manual

Fri Apr 03, 2009 5:01 pm
The KOffice team is experimenting the edition of application handbook on a wiki, this is done on userbase, currently the test is limited to updating KWord handbook. A lot of help with that experimentation is needed, so if you want to participate, please go to:

A lot of changes have been made since the manual was written, so it's important to get it updated. Questions relating to KWord belong here, of course. Questions relating to editing on userbase are best asked on the Discussion page related to the page you are working with. We'll try to answer as quickly as we can.

I would be happy to help but at present KOffice 2 isn't useful/stable enough for me to be using it regularly and therefore able to contribute from a user's perspective. I would like to be able to edit existing documents reliably to get used to KOffice 2 but at my last attempt only two of the three new files were saved correctly.

Will return to this as soon as I can use KOffice 2 regularly.

KOffice 2 is, at the moment, said to be unsuitable for production work. Please experiment on new files, not on your existing ones, for safety's sake.

I was experimenting with copies of existing files so that I was clear that what I was seeing was what I should see; so I didn't lose anything. But, to be really helpful to the manual writers, I would need to be able to use a much wider range of the facilities I normally use than I can at the moment.

Id be interested in helping out with the Koffice documentation, but I have to agree with john. I've tried to use Kword 2.1 twice, and it has crashed on me both times. It has to run long enough for me to learn how to use it before I can write about it.

Just an update on that last post; I re-installed kword and now it seems to be running well. I'll look through that documentation and start writing as soon as I can.

Sometime in the next few days I need to move the old KWord manual to KWord/1.x/Manual so that the new manual can be the default. In the short term, can you start by writing your input in your User page, to give me time to do this? I think the KWord maintainer is going to provide a skeleton of how he wants the manual to be organised. Once that's ready it will be quick and easy to copy/paste your input into the relevant pages. Thanks for volunteering.

Okay. It'll be a few days before I get started; I'm still familiarizing myself with the software. I think once the functionality holes get filled it's going to be pretty awesome.

The move of the old manual is now complete. The page http://userbase.kde.org/KWord/Manual now contains only an InfoBox, with the information about where the old one can be found. Please leave that InfoBox but feel free to start work on the new manual as soon as you can :-D

I've already gotten started, but is there someone I can contact when I run into trouble? I've had an issue or two using the software in the last day or two, and I've had a forum post up for a couple of days with no reply. If I can't figure something out I've got to have somebody I can get ahold of to tell me: a) it's a bug or, b) what I'm doing wrong.

I'd advise you to set up konversation and join the channel #koffice. There's usually someone around who can help. Responses may not be immediate, but are usually there. If you see tzander in the user list, start your question by naming him - that draws his attention. If you need mediawiki help, of course you can ask me.

Just an update... I've been down pretty much all week; first my daughter was sick and then I was. I'm a little behind. I'm also editing this to the nth degree... I want it to be really good. I hope to have some uploadable content by the end of next week.

Sorry to hear of the problems, but looking forward to seeing your work. Don't be afraid to put it up even while you are still not satisfied with it. We have two templates that you might care to use.
Code: Select all
{{Construction}}

(gives an under-construction info-box, or
Code: Select all
{{Being_Edited}}
- similar, but useful where you are continuing work already started.

In case you don't already know it, Toolbox has some useful code snippets.
