Icon box, Dock, Super Bar..

Wed Feb 11, 2009 9:57 am
KDE 4.3 will have something like Windows 7 Superbar, Enlightement e-box, or Xfce Icon Box?, that means a Taskbar without text.

In plasma IRC channel someone told me that may be possible in 4.3.

For who doesn't understand me some caps. :)

Boemann is working on a new panel idea for 4.3 (I think the name is "Kustodian" or something, I just call it Custard). Adding a textless mode to the current task manager shouldn't be too difficult for the developers either, just need to find someone that has the spare time to do it I guess.

Interesting, I somehow missed that E-mail. I'll go poke Martin again as it seems the patch was forgotten about when the thread got distracted.

Well the MacOS dock, the Windows superbar combine running tasks and single-click launching (which I hate) and Xfce has separate bars for them. Will Custard follow the Mac model or the Xfce?

If you want a panel with icons that start applications like the one in Xfce, it already exists - create a new panel in plasma and DnD icons you want on it.

Thanks for replies, I want means that exactly :D

I just did some hacking on the tasks plasmoid and added an option to only show
the icons and hide the text. So a kind of Windows 7 task bar. The advantage is
that much less space is required, you can have bigger icons and most important
it suites vertical panels much better. Currently tasks plasmoid kind of sucks
when having a big vertical panel.

I wish to try the titleless version, but I can't as I can't save it in Kompare in non sudo mode and if I do
Code: Select all
kdesudo kompare

I don't know with what to compare it.
So how can I enforce the change???

Anyway, It's so good, I like the "light" on the icons when the mouse is over. I'm waiting a group option, Hi

Both of those are awesome, great work. Stasks in particular is really good. It needs to tell the panel to grow when using "expand tasks", but other than that it works really, really well.

It is really impressive for something so new, great work. I look forward to seeing how it develops. Is it going to support multiple rows of icons in the future? Once it has that and the expanding thing fixed it will definitely replace the normal taskbar on my computers.
