Icons That Talk

It would be great if we could set notes on icons such as “send this to Emma tom” or if your Rss reader icon could say “175 Unread Item’s”. One more possibility would be to record a small voice message and a small indicator would attach itself to the icon.

In the .desktop-files such features could be integrated.
There would be an entry for the application and DBus could retreive the messages.
Alternatively you could directly set a message. For some very simple tasks the output of a command could be displayed.

It does look pretty. But what is the use case? Why does an icon "talk"? Who controls this? I could see a reason for systray icons, but they aren't really icons per se.

Three examples:
-You want to remind yourself
-The information is given by an external program via DBus-Communication, e.g. new EMails
-Very simple displays given by executing a simple command, maybe a countdown
I am wondering about the fact that here are 8 votings and my concrete implementation idea has 0 votings. :D

I still don't understand why you want "talking icons." We already have the KOrganizer reminder daemon and a countdown. We have a notification system that can notify in case of new email. We also have systray icons that count e.g. emails or RSS feed articles.

You are proposing a wholly new framework for icons, but don't tell why. Icons are used everywhere: Toolbars, application launchers, as symbols for files and folders, etc. None of these needs to do what you want. I think you want a plasmoid on the desktop or the panel. But even then, I don't quite understand what you want.
