Hi it would be great if there was a button to press to bring up a virtual on screen keyboard
I imagine this would be useful for touchscreen users as well as folks like me with dud batteries Cheers Mike |

openSUSE had this for KDE 3. When detecting a tablet PC, it automatically installed the 'xvkbd' package and showed it in KDM. But this feature should be integrated into mainline KDE.

This was request as wishlist and rejected couple of times because users could use xvkbd but:
1. You won't get same integration. 2. Appearence is not good 3. xvkbd and others have many missing features such as localized keyboards, touch/finger input, handwriten input, etc Windows Vista has really done a good job with it's keyboard for tablet pcs and touchscreens. I have sent a wishlist months ago that could be part of that feature and can't be done using xvkbd. See bug 181554: "Screen keyboard when screen is locked". https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=181554

This could finally be a good use for the widgets (plamoids) on top of the screen saver |

In case KDM becomes "plasmaified" (there is such a GSOC project), this might become possible. And the screensaver wish could then come as an add-on. Great idea for touch-screens!

Yesterday I comitted a first somekind of working version of a plasma virtual keyboard to playground. You find it here: http://websvn.kde.org/trunk/playground/ ... asmaboard/
It's really early code, something like a version 0.05 I want to make this plasmoid ready for the user. So if kdm gets plasmafied, the needed keyboard may be available. |

This keyboard would be useful not just for login purposes. Also for typing into any application so it has two positions: 1. Hidden in one side of the screen when you not use it 2. On top of any application. So you can type into them Can this be done with a plasmoid? Have you used a tablet with Windows Vista?

Plasmaboard can currently work as an applet on your desktop AND as a icon in the panel. A click on the icon opens and closes the resizeable keyboard, which positions above windows.
Not much magic in there, just like other plasmoids work. |

You can find the virtual keyboard on kde-look here:
kdm-virtual-keyboard-t-38935.html So let's hope kdm gets plasmafied. |
