[Brainstorm] Mentoring for Brainstorm

Sat May 09, 2009 10:21 pm
Hi!
There are a lot of small ideas, simple details for applications. Nobody thinks they are bad. But they are also not very exciting and they get only few votes and answers.
But such ideas, such details make a Desktop Environment user friendly.
The ideas are often not difficult to implement. When somebody has only few C++/Python/Ruby/Javscript experiences a mentor could help him. When nobody votes against the idea, the thread-starter could ask for any voluntary mentor. I think there are a lot developers who could give him the essential idea for implementation. Maybe they would exchange their Jabber-IDs or could meetat IRC for some development questions.
So also small details would be implemented. There could also be a sub-forum "development started". But I'm not sure about this issue.

What is you opinion?

Some time ago, I talked about i similar thing with some of the team members on IRC. We were thinking about tagging ideas that are easy to implement as "junior job". If you're new to KDE development and don't have any ideas, you can search the Brainstorm section for ideas tagged and . We'll probably talk more about it when the tag cloud plugin is ready.

I'm not sure about the mentoring idea. Personally, if I were that user, I would try to get familiar with the tools the developers use - mailing lists and IRC. There is also the Helping hands forum section.

This idea doesn't need "implementation", maybe the tags would help.
Of course there are mailing lists, IRC and the forum. This platforms should be used. Users should simply be encouraged to implement some "junior jobs".

I would suggest a bit different way

Ideas should be taged not only by program/ component name, but firstly by the purpose the are supposed to do

Like
  • Look&Feel
  • Performance
  • GUI improvemenet
  • Time saver
  • New feature
  • QuickFix
  • Fun

Then by the type of application

  • Generic
  • Desktop
  • Multimedia
  • Office
  • Internet
  • Maintenance and Settings
  • Games

And in the last place the name of software.

Like the most voted idea
Synchronisation Framework for KDE 4

Could be tagged as
Code: Select all
[Time saver][Maintenance and Settings][kSync] Synchronisation Framework for KDE 4

p.s. I hope I have more time next Tuesday and I'll finish tagging plugin ;)

I think tags like [New Feature][Office][Koffice] would be useless. The category is always determined by the application, so it's useless.

Okay, that's great, but what has this to do with the idea? :D
Development newbies should simply be encouraged to help with the development.

Its not useless, because the same idea could fit both Koffice and kate in example, so developers of kate could find it too.
More often situation, if user would like to suggest an idea for shared component, that could be used in all programs in that category.

Another question is, do we need to show this in title? (Having in mind forum would have better tagging plug-in, then writing tags into title)

Of course it would be great when they wouldn't be shown in title. ;)
