Opera, opening urls from KDE apps

Sat Mar 28, 2009 6:47 pm
Hi all,
Opera is my browser of choice, but lately it started to act weird.
Never had this issue before, but for some time now when I click on any url in KDE apps, for example Akregator, Konsole the link is downloaded to temp in the background and Opera opens this cached files. This is so annoying, I have to copy links all the time, instead of just opening them. Konqueror acts normally.
Oh yea, I use latest KDE 4.2.1 and Opera is set as my default browser (at least I think so...)

The command configured as the external browser and/or the file association with text/html is missing %u as one of its parameters.

Without %u or %U KDE has no way to tell if the application can actually handle URLs and assumes it can only handle local files, thus downloading the URL to a temp file first.

Cheers,

anda_skoa, thanks, that was it.
Now another problem occred though, not as annoying but if you (or someone else) know the solution that would be great. When I open url from Konsole it opens in Opera, fine, but also there appears another Opera process on the taskbar. It's there for just a couple of seconds, just like KDE would try to run another instance of Opera to open the url. I tried appending the -newtab parameter to the browser, but it doesn't change anything (and it is the default action, so it should work without it anyway)

BTW, isn't it weird, that KDE assumes that user chosen browser is not in fact a browser, just a file viewer?

Maybe Opera doesn't correctly detect that it already has one instance running, or this is disabled in its config.

True. This is mainly a side effect of the same system being used for general file associations, where this kind of assumption can not be made.

This could probably be reported as a wish item on bugs.kde.org or in the brainstorm section.

Weird problem occured, not sure if after upgrading to 4.2.2 or before but I didn't notice - now opera opens links twice :/
Tried to google it, no luck however.

I was having the same problem, i had

Code: Select all
opera %u

as default web browser, under default applications

I tried removing %u and now it's ok. Obviously I don't know why and how...

Gert, %u is for letting KDE know that the given application can acutally handle URLs ( read 2nd post by anda_skoa) When I remove that %u I will get back to my original problem :)

I had already read your posts... as I said, I don't know why and how it fixed the problem for me: when I click on urls they show up in opera. Without showing up twice.
