It would be great if Kmail had an option to store the mails in folder out of .kde, something like what ktorrent offers.
Also, i think this should be implemented to all apps that store important data, like kopete's history and others

Very interesting if you want to have a portable version, just by storing your data for example in a pendrive. In fact this idea can be extended to almost every kde app, allowing you to have a fully portable profile, including backgrounds, multidesktop configuration, activities config.....
IMHO this is VERY interesting

A quickfix could be a schortcuts to use.
Anyway I'd like to get GUI for importing/exporting any personal data first (best with sync feature ) |

You can have your home directory on a pendrive, it would be very portable |

Actually, i was thinking about having only the mail out of .kde, something like Folders part in the configuration window in ktorrent, and the logging configuration in konversation.

This option is available (and has been available for as long as I can remember). From the kmail Manual:
6.14. Can I configure the location of my mail folder? Exit KMail, make a backup of ~/.kde/share/config/kmailrc, then open it with an editor and add e.g. folders=/home/username/.mail to the “[General]” section. Then move all your existing folders (including the hidden index files) to the new location. The next time you start KMail will use /home/username/.mail instead of /home/username/.kde/share/apps/kmail. Note that KMail will lose its filters if you change the mail folder's location but forget to move your existing folders. I keep my mail store on a separate data partition. Jim

It solves the problem assuming that you want the full profile being portable, because the home directory stores the config files of almost all the apps of your system. Besides people usually have other different things than config files in their homes, such as music or videos, so this would require a lot of space. The point would be only including in the pendrive the configs that you want, and of course it requires a way to modify the default folder. For example in Eclipse (programming IDE) for many options you have a default behaviour, but you can customize it for every project. Same here, if you only share for example kmail, korganizer and.. kopete between 2 different computers (home and work?). Having the whole user home in the pendrive might be a bad idea Regards |

Just a second, does an kmail, as any other kde app, are not going to be ported to akonadi?
If so all data is being stored in DB, not files( well DB itself is in file, but thats a different case). Since it is on MySQL, MySQL supports sync of data between servers |

Kmail is supposed to be a GUI application |

Correct, however some KDE applications may have features integrated which are not yet fully stable, therefore are disabled through not having a configuration option, with the default to disabled for when the configuration file entry is read.
Plasma (has) used this in a few places ( for example the seperate dashboard or virtual desktops containments affinity feature ) for instance.

Yes, but that will take a while.
No. Akonadi does not use its DB for storing PIM data, only for caching and metadata (e.g. MIME type). Cheers, _

So... PIM data is going to remain file system only? I thought one of the big enhancements was going to be easier central management of PIM data |
Administrator

It is. Akonadi centeralises management, storage, retrieval, etc. of PIM data so that individual applications do not have to concern themselves with that.
