Hello
I have Radeon 7000 with 2 VGA outputs - booth attached. Driver - open source ("ati"). In default, the screens are mirrored, but when I try to get them separate (like xinerama), then one of them don't redraw his content - by windows moving there are "marks", shadows ... (sorry - I don't speak English) krandr don't work at all - by identifying of outputs - on both monitors is shown "VGA-0, VGA-1" and it is not possible to move/separate them. xrandr - yes, but with described problem (xrandr --output VGA-1 --left-of VGA-0) In GNOME everything works - grandr, also xrandr, but in KDE not !! The same problem (GNOME OK, but KDE not) is in Ubuntu 8.10, SuSE 11.1, Mandriva 2009, ... I have try not just xrandr, but also xorg.conf setting: Section "Device" Identifier "Configured Video Device" Option "monitor-VGA-0" "mon0" Option "monitor-VGA-1" "mon1" EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier "mon0" # specifies a mode to be marked as the preferred initial mode of the monitor Option "PreferredMode" "1024x768" # This optional entry specifies the position of the monitor within the X screen. Option "Position" "0 0" EndSection Section "Monitor" Identifier "mon1" # specifies a mode to be marked as the preferred initial mode of the monitor Option "PreferredMode" "1024x768" # This optional entry specifies the position of the monitor within the X screen. Option "RightOf" "mon0" EndSection Section "Screen" Identifier "Default Screen" Monitor "mon0" Device "Configured Video Device" DefaultDepth 24 SubSection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "1024x768" Virtual 2048 768 EndSubSection EndSection This takes affect already by Xserver start, also kdm/gdm are in "xinerame" an I don't have to use "randr" actions in KDE/GNOME. But this unfortunately don't help in KDE. One of screens is damaged. Have anybody the same problem ? With other "dualhead" card on "ati" or other free driver ? And only in KDE ? Thanks for replays .

Does anybody use dual head (on one card) configuration ?
I'm sure yes. And with which result ? |

New info.
I find out, that in Kubuntu 9.04 is the problem repaired. There is KDE 4.2.2 and Xorg 1.6.0. But in Mandriva 2009.1 (Kde 4.2.2, Xorg 1.6.1) the Problem persist. ALSO - someon by Ubuntu team find out the Problem (it was also in previous (K)ubuntu 8.10, ...) and in a new release is it OK, but unfortunatey I thing the the Patch is NOT in main source of KDE 4.2.2. If someone of KDE team would read this thread - can You repair it for the Future ? |

You will likely get a higher chances of having the problem fixed in vanilla KDE by contacting the developers on the appropriate mailing list. Please include details of the patch, where it is sourced from, etc. when doing so, and attach a copy of the patch in question.
The appropriate mailing list depends on where the fix was needed to be made. Alternately, you could ask the author of the patch in question to forward it to the developers.

Zarin? I thought Xinerama type setups were supported?

Xinerama-type and XRandR multi-monitor setups are supported. For the open source ATI driver you will be using XRandR mode.
Although I am having a hard time understanding exactly what's happening it sounds like kapetr is experiencing a driver bug and is outside of my knowledge in solving. You will need to get in contact with the ATI driver developers (#radeon on irc.freenode.net).

I don't thing, this is a bug in "driver" / X server, because it would affect not just KDE, but GNOME too.
I think it is problem of KDE 4.x. I would like to contact KDE developers, but I can't find how to report this possible error. Does know anybody how ? And about the "patch" in Kubuntu 9.04 - it is just my theory. I don't know, if it is true. |

GNOME likely contains a workaround (hack) to ensure your graphics card functions correctly. KDE screen management tools do not contain these and thus experience the problem.

I don't think so.
I remember, that I have try also to run just X server with xterm ("mini X") - and the dualhead configuration (from xorg.conf XOR manually through xrand) has work fine, without redrawing problems. Also without "GNOME workaround". Also it is problem in KDE. |

The garbage on the second monitor is possibly because nothing is drawing an X background. It is fixed in KDE 4.3, but only if KWin is handling the screen.

If I would use Compiz, would KWin be still active to redraw the background, or it is so, that compiz replace KWin ?
(I do not know much about this things ...) Thank You. |

Only one window manager can run at once therefore if Compiz is running KWin is not.

YES - in KDE 4.3 seems the problem be FINALLY fixed ))
I have tested KDE for Live 4.3 - and my dualhead works. Also I can go back to KDE. |
