renamed from Change "open with..." behaviour
By now we have: right click on a file -> Open with -> other -> Dialog to select app This is very not-intuitive. e.g. I had to open some files as root with "kdesu kate" instead of just "kate". I managed to do it well, BUT "kdesu kate" became the default app for that type. and it was very annoying, since I couldn't find a way to change this. Yes now i found I can do this by right click -> properties -> tool icon near type. But it was just an accidental discovery. My suggestion is to open not only dialog to select file, but "Change file type EXT" dialog in a background too, so user could easily change other associated apps also Or even replace old-school select app dialog with some kickoff/lancelot part like

For this wouldn't a "Set application as default application" which is not checked by default suffice? Opening the dialog would confuse the user possibly, and would increase load on the system, not to mention it would be impossible without having the change file type dialog popup the "Open With..." dialog.
Please do not use Imageshack, or sites like it which interfere with access to the image through Java, etc. since this makes the images inaccessible to many. It is a rare time when Konqueror loads Imageshack properly and downloads the picture in question.

Well the first thing i thought about, was that select app dialog is too old-school. Believe it is possible to find a better solution than in my mockups, that are just screenshots of e few windows
In my opinion it should be as much similar to kickoff menu (light version?? or part??), so user would know where to go to find the app. Also with big buttons to set this as default AND to open "change file type dialog" p.s. Imageshack does not use java, just JavaScript. If this host is problematic to others, what another host should i use?

That would be a possible idea....
http://omploader.org is apparently a good image hosting service to try over ImageShack ( recommended by an-idea-for-dolphi ... l#pid75915 )

You don't need to change host, just do what I do link directly to a picture instead to "ImageShack interface". Like this: [--URL=http://img408.imageshack.us/my.php?image=kdef1.png][IMG--]http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/5042/kdef1.th.png[/IMG] then you edit the URL part so that it links to the picture itself: http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/5042/kdef1.png So that you get this: [--URL=http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/5042/kdef1.png][IMG--]http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/5042/kdef1.th.png[/IMG] Which looks like this:

I think the more important issue is the final suggestion, which is to replace it entirely. Lukas, perhaps you could separate out the idea for a new "choose application" dialog so we can flesh it out more, because I think it is a very good idea. The current one has not kept up with the current KDE 4 way of doing things and is just hard to use. For instance there is no good way to search for applications.

What about adding a KRunner-like Interface and offering an option to switch to the current Interface?

I do think KRunner is more appropriate for the job, to be honest...

yeah I often start typing in the litle area, and I always get annoyed by the fact, that it does not "work" like krunner

I agree. There is a wish around in bugzilla.
