This idea is directly related to the recent post of Aaron Seigo about Social Desktop, and especially his vision on the third paragraph after the bulleted list.

I think Plasma has a Geolocation data engine and I recall reading somewhere that this engine could use your GPS in case you had one or an estimation of your location based on your IP. But what if you could associate a location (geolocation coordinates or a "semantic" location like "work", "home", etc.) to the networks you connect to? Then, whenever you are connected to a known network KDE would figure out where you are, and probably what for.

This way Plasma could switch to a "work" activity when you connect your laptop to the wifi network of your corporation and go back to a "home" activity when you connect it to the fixed network of your house, weather wallpaper could show the climate of your parent's home city when you connect to their network while visiting them, etc... I believe this could have great potential for contextual services.

What do you think?

I think this could be interesting. Connect the activity concept to geolocation.

Interesting feature, but would be useless for since kde could use activity per desktop. Now I have sets for work, home....

But If this could done as some sort of trigger, so it could be used together with lets say filter-virtual-des ... 61769.html

In deed KDE could get a new triggers service, so we could join actions (GPS, network name, environment noise level from mic, sound from apps (voIP), time etc) with actions (Change activity, run task, mute sound, change IM status message etc). It would be cool :D

Perhaps that could be combined with this idea about sound schemes. I must admit I didn't initially think in terms of triggers but I really like the idea . As Solid1986Snake said on that thread, it will be similar to what power profiles do now.

It could be interesting to know what Aaron Seigo has in mind for the problem of changing already defined activities. As you say, activity selection can be triggered already by virtual desktop switching...
