Hi,
I was thinking about the possibility to make KDE (SC) preload the >default user< settings before the password is provided by the user. My scenario: I have a couple of users, but I use my default one 99% times (which I think is the most common sitiation with desktops/laptops) Now, when I boot my laptop and want to leave the room, kdm waits for my password, which leads to my PC being idle for some time. Then, when I return I have to input my password and wait until KDE loads everything. What I would like to see is that kdm (which is run as root, right?) would preload my settings and programs in the background and wait for the password input, after which KDE would finish loading in seconds (optimally). That would be just awesome. Now, I realize that 1% times I would like to login as different user, but in that case I would gladly wait 3x as long, for kdm to discard my defalt user session and load new one - an acceptable price for me. This option would, of course, be optional for the user and maybe a possibility to enter a time after which kdm would start loading the session in the backgroud? I hope I explained it enogh and my idea is possible from technical point of view. Cheers, simh EDIT: Oh yea, I forgot to add I do not mean an autologin option and I am not interested in this. I want kdm/KDE to require my password before any work is possible |

This can already be done via adaptive readahead daemons such as "preload", perhaps available in your package repository.
However from my experience it actually becomes a bit more inconvenient as it chooses to load stuff _whilst_ KDM is loading, Causing KDM's loadtime to increase by a fair amount. Still, an integrated option? Sounds interesting.

It would be a possible solution to make an autologin and lock the screen automatically
(I don't know whether this is already possible) At least it would be possible to add a script that locks the screen to autostart. |
