I really love the feature to color a file in mac os.
And I think this tiny feature would improve usability of kde further.

From http://articles.directorym.net/Mac_OS_X ... 16185.html
You can append labels to important folders and files in order to distinguish them visually. These labels appear as a colored bar around the item’s name. This coloration appears whether you are viewing the item in List, Icon, or Column view. You can use labels to help organize folders and files. For example, business folders and files can have red color labels while letters to friends can have blue color labels. When you have a folder or file selected, you may not be able to view the exact color of the label. To view the color of the label properly, click outside the icon of the folder or file. The label remains constant if you change the folder or file. For example, you can change the name or move the folder or file, and the label remains the same color. There is no preassigned meaning to a label color. For example, you can use red labels for personal or work items, for movies, for folders that are full, or for work that needs to be done. For more information about folder and file views, see Chapter 2.
1 Click the icon of the folder that you want to label.
2 Click File.
3 Click the color that you want to use to label the folder. Label a Folder
# The filename displays with the color label that you selected.
Can I change a label color to another color? Yes. You can repeat Steps 1 to 2 and then select a different color. The folder or file appears with the new label color that you selected.

There are some service-menues available on kde-look.org to do exactly this. I've used one for quite some time. Well, okay. Not files but folders. It may not be exactly what you're after, but maybe it's good enough.

Another solution is to use nepomuk to tag the files and use customized searches to find the files quickly.

I was interpreting this is changing the background color around an icon, not changing the color of the icon itself.

The mac os function is not changing the folder color but it is changing the background color of the file name label (and in a list view the background color of the row or at least the name cells of the table).

It is looking like this (I think the video is mac os 9. Yet, it gets clear what the function is doing. It is a great way to organize your files in a folder):

Just an idea: it would be nice to be able to flexibly assign colors to nepomuk/dolphin tags. The coloring could then be done according to file tags, and I could easily highlight a tagged subset of files.

It's a nice feature and one that shouldn't be hard to implement. For now I use colored directory icons but it's not the same, as it works only for some icon sets.
