Grid for Window-Alignment

Thu Nov 12, 2009 11:14 pm
Hi!

Have you ever used the Qt-Designer? Create some widgets, select then choose the "grid-layout"-option. They are arranged automatically in a grid. You do not have to use special keys to align them. You place them and the layout will be "optimized" with one click. Something like this could be possible in KWin for windows. You press a special shortcut and KWin will auto-arrange all visible (with shift also invisible ones on the virtual desktop) windows in a grid. It would combine the features of tiling and "normal" window-managers. With a simple shortcut there would be the main-advantage of tiling window managers, but it would still be easy to control the windows with you mouse.
Same could be possible for Plasma, but that is another idea...

It should not be something like Apple's Expos??. Therefore there are special window-effects. (well, I'm sad that they need compositing)

I write similar idea here pretty much at the same time: brainstorm.php#idea83752

Basically, it is very much same, but also includes some concrete suggestions.

Grid for Window-Alignment

I just want to have a shortcut for auto-arrangement. Look at the Qt Designer: When you select the Grid-option you do not have to say "I want to have 2x2", the current constellation is simply optimized.

@Daniel_boff
How does it work? I've found it in systemsettings: "Tile windows by dragging them to the side of the screen" But how to activate this? What happens then?
