The current taskbar is kinda hard to use when you have a lot windows open. I recently stumbled over the "control active window"-widget and had, after some experimentating, some nice idea for an better taskbar.

I guess an image says more than a long text:


+When you hover an symbol the active window slot should show the window title and icon from the hovered symbol instead of the active one for faster navigating.

"control active window" widget ? I Google'ed and found no reference to it, kindly explain.

Have you looked at stasks and/or fancy tasks?

I think he means the "Current Application Control" widget. It might be in plasma-netbook...

It's part of the default plasmoids. It simply shows the title and the Icon of the current task and an button for closing it. (made for netbooks I guess). I put it next to the the taskbar and kinda liked it to always see the active window directly and always at the same point. So I thought a bit further and made this idea.

Isn't this already available in widgets such as Smooth Tasks or STasks? It's quite similar.

smooth tasks does something similar , but it doesnt give controls to active window.

It doesn't give controls to maximise, but it does give control to close upon hovering iirc. There is an option to shrink to just the icon and explain upon hover.

At least in the "new" preview mode there is plenty of room to add additional buttons in smooth tasks.

I like the idea to have possiblity to close the window with single click from the taskbar. Because when using touch screen, you have have all other functions easily done with one finger without decoration buttons, but closing is very hard and needs an context menu.

Now I have only a close button in window decoration because I only need it for single click system. When I have mouse, I can use middle click to close window from it decoration. But with touchscreen it is impossible.

Now I can maximize by dragging wondow to top edge of screen (50% from both sides).
Minimize from taskbar itself and shadow by double clickin the decoration.

I have added a wish for adding new function for KWin what would be a double click what would allow closing the window. This is as well functionality in BeOS. Very powerfull way, just double click to close the window.

Thats why I would be intrested about this option to close the window with single click/double click on task panel for easier touch screen usage.

I kinda fear that I would hit the close button by accident when trying to minimize the window. At least thereâ��d have to be a “really close?” dialog, I think.

What about for those of us who have thin taskbars? I would recommend it to only show those buttons on hover, and if it's too thin, show them one next to another instead of on top so it can fit.

And what about Fancy tasks plasmoid ?

Your taskbar suggestion look nice. What i want to suggest is "animated taskbar" something like the drawer will pull out if your mouse is move on the icon. if you click, of course it will launch the application

This idea has good feature what would help many touchscreen users. But if we place anything what gives new dialoge (asking is user sure to close it) or what needs hovering over, it does not work at all.

Think about how you could close things with just hovering over tasks.
And dialoges are bad. We need to get rid of them.

If we could get with this a function to close the task just with single click instead two. Why would we want to add a new dialoge what would be +1 window and +1 click so we would be even worse situation than the current one?
