The activities bar shows a lot of different activities (currently 11). I can delete them, but when I restart plasma, they appear again.
Most of them are an empty desktop with the default wallpaper. But others are copies of my main desktop with "slight variations". The wallpaper is missing (white background) or some of the plasmoids are not there. I never created any of these strange activities and now I can't get rid of them. I addition, plasma-desktop consumes very large amounts of memory. After a fresh start it's already about 70MB and it increases to over 400 when I switch through the activities. Before 4.5 plasma would use at most 30-40MB. How can I get rid of those unwanted activities and fix the large memory consumption? |

It appears that your Plasma configuration is likely corrupted.
Please try the following first however. Remove the activities as normal in Plasma using the Activities manager, then open Konsole and run:
If the activities re-appear again, your configuration files are corrupt, and you will need to start Plasma from scratch:

There is an active bug about this issue: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=248386.
You can also delete the activities from the activity manager by hitting the stop button on the activity and clicking the x that appears.

Unfortunately, that doesn't help much when they keep reappearing when I restart plasma. I have yet to try, whether removing the plasma config helps, thanks for the information. In the meantime could you tell me how much memory plasma uses up on your system? (that question goes to anyone who reads this post ) On my desktop system I don't have the issue with the activities and I'm not using any widgets on my desktop. Nonetheless, plasma-desktop uses about 80MB of memory, which is about three times as much as it did in KDE 4.4. |

19.0MB here, plus pixmaps of 6MB.

About 37 Mb, with Dolphin and Iceweasel (with 5 tabs), running.
I am using the Nividia driver. In my laptop, with Intel driver, plasma-desktop takes several Mb less, probably about 20 Mb, although I can't confirm right now. |

The bug regarding new activities appearing at login has been tracked down, according to what I read on the mailing list used by the Plasma developers. It will be fixed (in two different ways) for both the upcoming 4.6 and 4.5.2, hopefully.

That's odd, I have 60-200MB memory usage on both my machines and I'm not using any plasmoids, except the panel, the systray and the device notifier.
Good to hear that the activity bug will be fixed. |

Still an active issue in 4.5.2 out here...it seems like we're going to wait until 4.5.3

This seems to be fixed, but i have something, that nobody mentioned here and seems to be related with this.
I have "different widgets for each desktop" turned on, because I want different wallpapers. I knew about this(activities) bug from previous instalation, when I've installed Arch now, so I've turned off "Activity Manager", i thought that it will not create any additional activities, what was appearently true. But! my desktops was rotating(at every login/logout) i.e. Desktop 1 wallpaper was shown at desktop 1,4,2,3 and at fifth login again at desktop 1. Desktop widgets had different cycle : widgets from desktop 2 has gone 2,3,1,4,2. Everything was happeping until i've turned on "Activity Manager" service. Which had created buggy activities explained here, what I've resolved by mirgrating plasma config to ~/plasma-config/ how bcooksley shown here
